State Historic Preservation Division: Navigating the SHPD Review Process
Hawaiʻi has unique historic resources that showcase our island values, lifestyle, and culture. Many of these resources are now considered historic and preserving this part of Hawaiʻi’s history requires the commitment and collaboration with many partners. This presentation will help to inform you of the State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) role and process when reviewing federal, state and local projects impacting the built environment under Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes (HRS) Chapter 6E and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.

Who should attend?
- Professional Planners, Architects, and Engineers involved in DAGS projects which may be subject to SHPD review
Conducted by the DLNR – State Historic Preservation Division and DAGS Public Works Division
AIA CES Credit (3.5 LU) will be offered for this presentation. AIA Honolulu is the registered provider.
The following Learning Objectives will be covered:
- Participants will be able to describe the State Historic Preservation Division’s (SHPD) process and role in reviewing proposed projects when Chapter 6E Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS) and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 is triggered, which both help to preserve the history and culture of Hawaii and the nation.
- Participants will be able to distinguish between the different types of SHPD review, identify which agencies and consulting parties are involved, and determine what materials and information is needed for the review process.
- Participants will be able to determine the procedural steps in order to commence SHPD consultation at the early stages of project planning, identify and evaluate if significant historic properties are present, and assess the impact of the project on historic properties.
- Participants will be able to interpret the various determinations to which the SHPD may concur to in writing.
Registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis via the web and at no cost. A total of 200 seats will be available.

Recommended parking locations are the State Capitol Basement, Iolani Palace, Kekuanaoa Bldg., Makai Garage, South Street Garage, or the City and County of Honolulu lot.
